Presenter's Biography:

Ms. Lau Wan Ching was called to the Bar of Hong Kong in 2007. Areas of specialization (civil practice) in her legal profession include broadcasting and media, company, contracts, family, land and property, personal injury, mediation, mental health, sale of goods etc. Ms. Lau is also experienced in conducting criminal litigation (criminal practice), acting for prosecution as counsel on fiat or acting as defence counsel to defend in criminal cases (including traffic and departmental summons).

Ms. Lau was also qualified as accredited mediator and started her private practice for mediation since 2011. She is current accredited mediator of Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), UK; Accredited General Mediator of Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited; Listed Accredited Mediator both of Hong Kong Bar Association; and listed accredited mediator of the Building Management Mediation Co-ordinator's Office of Lands Tribunal, Mediator of the Joint Mediation Helpline Office.

Before switching her career and joined the legal profession, Ms. Lau worked for broadcasting media in Hong Kong as senior journalist and news anchor including News and Information Services Division of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), News Channel of Cable TV, also News Department of Asia Television for more than a decade. Therefore, she also equips with strong background in media law including libel/defamation, privacy, reputation risk and access to information.

During her practice, Ms. Lau also engages as part-time lecturer or guest speaker in the local universities in Hong Kong, teaching commercial law, medical law and media law. She also delivers lectures for CPD training courses in regard to legal issues related to building management and landlord and tenant, social media, copyright, competition law and Trade Description Ordinance, criminal law (including road traffic) etc.
 
Objective:

The purpose of this course is to provide a brief summary of law, practice and procedure related to road traffic offences most commonly dealt by legal practitioners in the courts of Hong Kong. In addition, this course will also cover some discussion over practical aspects/ problems faced when dealing with the road traffic offences at different stages, starting from initial contact to client at scene up to the preparation and conducting trial hearing for the traffic offences in courts.
 
Outline:

  • Pre-trial preparation of road traffic offence litigation
  • Practical guide for trial including how to deal with evidence (for example, expert evidence) and relevant procedures
  • Statutes related to road traffic offences, for example, Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap. 374)
  • Common road traffic offences, for example, careless driving, dangerous driving, drink driving/ drug driving, disqualification and other driving-related offences.
