Presenter's Biography:

Ms. Lau Wan-ching was admitted to the Barrister of Hong Kong High Court in 2007 and her practice covers civil, commercial, family, and criminal law in Hong Kong. Ms. Lau also qualified as a Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Grater Bay Area (GBA) Lawyer focusing on foreign-related legal practice. In addition, she obtained mediator accreditation under the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), UK, in 2010 and is currently recognized as an Accredited General and Family Mediator under Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL), as well as a Sport Mediator under Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO). Additionally, Ms. Lau holds dual qualification as an Arbitration Tribunal Secretary for both SCIA and SCIAHK. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Lau gained experience in television broadcast journalism in Hong Kong, serving as a news anchor and senior news reporter for TVB News and Cable News channels.

Ms. Lau holds two master's degrees, one in Business Administration and another in Public Administration. Since 2000, she has delivered lectures to various departments of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and provided CPD courses, seminars, and workshops to private sector clients on topics including land and building management, landlord and tenancy issues, court procedures, judicial review, criminal law and road traffic offences, copyright, competition law and trade descriptions, risk management, and social media administration. She is also a co-author of the Annotated Ordinances of Hong Kong: Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance (Cap 59), 1st issue, and the Annotated Ordinances of Hong Kong: Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap 374), 1st and 2nd issues, published by LexisNexis, Hong Kong.
 
Objective:

This course is designed for legal professionals and those interested in road traffic offences in Hong Kong, aiming to equip participants with a succinct overview of the law, practice, and court procedures concerning road traffic offences commonly handled in court of Hong Kong, from relevant statutes, forms of evidence, court procedure, pre-trial preparation to courtroom advocacy. Also, through the highlight of recent court cases for example, those relating illegal car hire services (白牌車) case, together with the sharing of practical experience, participants will learn up-to-date insights concerning practical strategies and effective case management, also legal arguments relating to road traffic cases in Hong Kong.

  • Pre-trial preparation of road traffic offence litigation
  • Practical guide for trial including how to deal with evidence (for example, expert evidence) and relevant procedures
  • Statutes related to road traffic offences, for example, Road Traffic Ordinance (Cap. 374)
  • Common road traffic offences, for example, careless driving, dangerous driving, drink driving/ drug driving, disqualification and other driving-related offences.
